Mother’s Day is quickly approaching, and I’ll be traveling back to my hometown soon for a visit with my mom for Mother’s Day!
Every year for as long as I can remember, we’ve made it a Mother's Day habit to visit a local nursery and pick out our summer baskets. What a great way to spend time with the ones you love AND have a way to remember the day all summer long! I have a hard time picking - I want them all! Luckily, I’m sort of addicted to plants, and I have them all over my porch and patio.
I may not be buying flowers on Mother’s Day this year - I can't carry them back on the plane - but I’ve already started the process with two gorgeous fuchsia plants hanging in the corners of my patio. I’ll be buying more when I return home.
Of course, there are other fun things to buy for Mom. (Or maybe for yourself!) Try these out for size.
Bittman Bread cookbook and Lodge Cast Iron Dutch Oven
I LOVE giving gifts that work together and have done it frequently in the past. Like a teapot and a selection of teas. Or concert tickets and a gift certificate for a nearby restaurant. I recently wrote about my love for bread - why not give it as a gift for Mom this year?
Include a cookbook and a Dutch oven - she’ll be set to start baking, and you might even reap the reward.
Tea Maker and Tea
Speaking of teapots, I’ve found a new one I’m thrilled about. A few years ago, my husband started sneezing after his morning coffee. We didn’t think much about it, and I’m not a coffee drinker, so I didn’t research. Then I read an article about how a drip coffeemaker could be making you sick. Another a-ha moment. He had received a French press as a gift a few months before, so he figured out how to use it, and LOVED the coffee it produced. Problem solved!
As a tea drinker, I’ve been aware of the problems with tea bags for quite a while. But they’re convenient, and I’ve never found the perfect tea diffuser that I can’t live without. So I went through phases of using loose leaf and switching to tea bags … Until I noticed a woman using what resembled a French press for her tea in a YouTube video. A little search turned up this wonderful loose leaf tea press. Problem solved! It makes the perfect gift for any tea lover. 😘
Eat Your Flowers
Should you give Mom desserts or flowers? Why not give her both? I saw this gorgeous chef on a show not that long ago and fell in love with her concept. Start with the Eat Your Flowers cookbook, or select a box of flower cookies. How about nature chocolate bars? Or give her pantry items where she can start baking herself. Honestly, I have fun just spending time on her site - give it a try!
Warmies
Several years ago, I found the cutest sloth tucked away in a basket in a store. I couldn’t leave him there - I knew he was a perfect gift for my adult daughter. I may have borrowed him a time or two. Or three. That year, for Mother’s Day, she returned the favor and bought me a pink unicorn. This little guy joins me, sitting at my desk and watching TV at night, on the coldest days of the year. It’s a gift any Mom will love - just be sure to order several, for everyone in the family to borrow from time to time.
Gorgeous Flower Apron
When I went searching for an apron filled with gorgeous flowers, I discovered they can be challenging to find. (When you have something specific in mind …) I’ll never say NO to a great-quality apron AND one that makes me smile in the process. I recently found one at Anthropology that I could definitely say YES to. I love the touch of romance they put into all of their linens.
Olive Oil
I’m going local here - it’s one of my favorite wineries. Why? Because it also has an olive grove and produces its own olive oil. Durant’s grounds are beautiful if you’re heading into Oregon wine country for wine tasting, and if you hit it right, you can also get a behind-the-scenes tour of their local olive oil production. I loved it! I’m also a little obsessed with their gift selections. Many family members and friends have received delightful gift boxes in the mail.
Lotuswei
It should come as no surprise that I believe plants hold special power and energy. I think we’re missing so much potential for wellness by ignoring one of the most beautiful things about Mother Earth. When I found this site, I was instantly attracted to so many of their products. Jump in, take a look, take the flower quiz, and see which flowers truly resonate with your life. You’ll be hooked - and now’s the perfect time to let Mom try too!
It’s the experience …
As a mom, I adore spending time with my daughter. She’s a professional pastry chef, so she’s created some GORGEOUS cakes for us to enjoy on Mother’s Day.
But for me, it’s always about the experience. I love spending time with her, and relish in it every chance I get.
We’ve done a paint-and-sip course, and each of us has our paintings hanging in our homes. I adored a terrarium-building course she gave me to create cute terrariums for our desks.
If you only have one thing to give this Mother’s Day, make it personal - give something you love to do together. For me, that’s my very favorite gift in the world, always has been and always will be.
