I’ve been making my own cereal for close to a decade now.
I love it because it’s fresh, uses only natural ingredients, and tastes great!
We’re a nation of cereal eaters. Studies show 283 million Americans consumed breakfast cereals in 2020, increasing to 290 million by 2024.
I’m no exception. I ate cereal as a kid. I ate it as an adult. I’ve eaten it for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
But it’s hard to ignore that cereal isn’t the best food to consume.
Years ago, I started paying attention to the ingredient list. I knew there had to be a way to make it myself. And with a little research, I found a recipe. I’ve morphed it into what I like, and I make it every couple of weeks, depending on how fast we go through it.
I can’t live without my morning smoothies. But I also love to add a little cereal with it for crunch and to start my day with even more nutrients. Smoothie bowls are an incredible way to get all those nutrients first thing in the morning.
This isn’t a difficult recipe. Set aside an hour or so to go through it beginning to end. Then enjoy your homemade cereal for the next few days, depending on how fast you eat it.
My Homemade Granola Recipe
I use only organic products wherever possible. You can mix and match your favorite ingredients. Or include it all! It stores well, and I often carry it with me when we travel.
½ cup oats
1 cup cooked quinoa
½ cup dried fruit – pick your favorites: blueberries, cranberries, raisins, cherries
½ cup coconut flakes
½ cup sunflower seeds
½ cup pumpkin seeds
½ cup chia seeds
½ cup flax seeds
½ cup cacao nibs
½ cup pecans
½ cup walnuts
½ cup almonds
Cinnamon, to taste
Maple syrup or honey, to taste
Mix all ingredients except for maple syrup or honey. Spread on a baking sheet, and add a touch of maple syrup or honey on top.
Preheat oven to 300 degrees Fahrenheit. Bake for 15 minutes. Mix the cereal. Bake for another 15 minutes. Cool. Store in air-tight containers.
This recipe is super easy. Like something? Add more of it. Not a fan of something? Don’t include it. You can customize it by adding more. Include only dried blueberries and add more coconut. Or add more nuts and cacao nibs. The flavors come alive depending on what you add.
I will say I focus on getting organic ingredients. I’ve had trouble finding organic dried blueberries lately, so I’ve been putting in other fruits. Yes, you can dry your own if you have the tools and the time.
That’s the beauty of this recipe. Make it a few times. You’ll find what you love. Then make it, store it, and use it.
I love eating it with my smoothie every morning. It adds crunch and a little more depth to my morning meal.
I’ve used it as a crumble, or a topping for muffins. It’s that versatile.
