Yes, There Are Easy Things You Can Do In Your Kitchen That Say: I Love You
Number 9 really makes my day
“I got this for you.”
Those few words can stir so many emotions. Especially when your husband follows you into the kitchen.
I turned around and eyed what he had in his hands. A big package, wrapped in a brown paper bag. My husband isn’t known for his wrapping skills, but he is known for his thoughtful gifts.
It was heavy. I placed it on the counter and peered inside.
“A knife! You got me the knife!”
I know. Not what you were expecting, were you?
But he’d been listening to me talk about our dull knives. Ugh, I wanted to chop like they do on the cooking shows. I wanted to slice a tomato and not have it fall apart.
I’d even hinted at the knife I had in mind - “Look at this one,” I’d shown him one morning as we sipped our morning beverages of choice. I’d seen it on my favorite YouTube cooking show.
So deep inside this brown package bag was … love.
He listened. He surprised me for no reason. Just because.
And aren’t those truly the best gifts of all?
Listening can spice up the kitchen and fill it with joy:
🍰The last slice of cake … delivered to the person who needs it the most.
🍓A really pretty crystal pitcher of water in the fridge. Filled with strawberries and a stem of mint.
🧁A sweet treat. Just because. Not a party. Not a guest. Just because Tuesday needed it.
🍇Washed grapes. A bowl of them, sitting in the fridge, ready to eat.
💖Writing a love note in dry-erase marker on the fridge. Or a silly joke. Or “I’m so proud of you.”
🍲Making a double batch of soup. Freezing the second half. Then an “ah” when you need it most.
👩🍳That favorite apron you spent hours finding online. The one with the right colors and patterns that make you smile.
☕️A bowl. A plate. A spoon. A mug. Having sets is overrated. Why not buy one because you love it!
🌸Edible flowers! They dress up any plate, and meal.
🎶Your favorite song! Let the music carry you. Dance as you stir. Let the kitchen be a joyful place, not a chore factory.
I sliced through the tomato and quartered it. Then popped a piece into my mouth. Mmm …
Home-grown tomatoes just taste better. And this was exquisite. We’d selected seeds at our local farmer’s market, an heirloom variety we’d never experienced.
This little charmer was dark in color, promised to be sweet. And was it ever!
“Here, try this.” I held out a bite to my husband.
He took it. Sighed. “You just can’t get this in the store.”
No, you can’t.
But if you pay attention, if you truly fill your kitchen with joy, you can find it.
In the farmer’s market, nestled into the booths. You talk to the farmers. You buy what they’ve grown. What they’ve put their heart and soul into, hand-picked, packed up, and delivered on a Saturday morning.
You bring it home. You slice it. You share it.
And it’s everything.
